FOX
Ah, yes, poor Gepetto, the wood carver. It’s so sad really.
PINOCCHIO
What do you mean? Why do you say ‘poor Gepetto’? Why is it sad?
FOX
Well master puppet, everyone knows how Gepetto has no money at all to speak of. He can barely afford to feed himself.
PINOCCHIO
Is that true? My dear Poppy?
FOX
Oh, indeed it is, quite sadly true. How will he afford to feed a little boy now, too? Or even keep clothes on his back.
PINOCCHIO
I did not know! Oh, my poor Papa! I will be a terrible burden to him now. If only there were some way I could get some money for him!
FOX
You are a good son to be so concerned for your ‘papa’. Hmmm, you know, I just might have an idea about how you could get a lot of money for old Gepetto.
PINOCCHIO
You do! Oh please tell me how!
FOX
Well, as it happens, my friend here and I were just on our way to the Magic Vineyard.
PINOCCHIO
Yes. And how will that help me?
FOX
You poor wooden head! How little you know of the world. Everyone knows that if you ‘plant’ a gold coin in the Magic Vineyard, then go away for, oh, let’s say, about an hour or so, when you come back you dig where you planted the coin and you will find a big bag of gold! Thousands and thousands of coins! Isn’t that right, Cat?
CAT
Is it really?
(FOX stomps on CAT's foot)
Ouch! Oh yeah, of course that is true! Everybody knows that! Oh you can always trust my friend the Fox to know what is what.
FOX
Ah, thank you my dear friend, Cat. So there it is, Pinocchio. All you have to do is plant a gold coin in the Magic Vineyard and soon you will be rich beyond imagining!
PINOCCHIO
Oh, but I do not have a gold coin.
FOX
Yes that is a problem. Let me think, hmmm, perhaps you have something you could sell….?
PINOCCHIO
Gosh, no, I only have my school books here.
CAT
Why, those would do nicely, don’t you think, Fox?
FOX
Pinocchio, why you are a genius! You can sell these old books to the bookstore over there, then you will have a gold coin!
