Blocking Popups in Netscape

Beginning with version 7.0, Netscape offers support for blocking popup windows. The following document was written for Netscape 7.02, but settings should be similar for all versions of Netscape 7.x.

  1. Start Netscape.

  2. Click on the Edit menu at the top of the screen, and then choose Preferences.

  3. If there is a plus sign (+) next to Privacy & Security, click on it.

  4. Click on Popup Window Controls (this item may be truncated on your screen).

  5. Click on the Suppress Popups option to enable it, as shown below.

  6. It is important to remember that blocking popups entirely may impede the functionality of some web sites. In particular, online banking sites frequently use popups to prompt users for important information. For this reason, Netscape offers a method of creating a list of sites that are allowed to spawn popup windows. To access this list, click on the Exceptions button.

  7. As shown below, you will find that the Popup Exceptions box that appears already has a number of sites listed. These are merely suggestions provided by Netscape, and you can freely remove any of these sites by clicking once on the site to select it and then clicking on the Remove button. (Alternatively, you can remove all of the sites listed and start from scratch by clicking the Remove All button.) At the very least, you will probably want to remove netscape.com from the list, as Netscape's own site is full of popup advertisements.

  8. To add a site to the list of sites from which popups are allowed, type the domain name of the web site into the box and click on Add. For example, if your bank's web site is www.yourbank.com, simply type yourbank.com into the box and then click on Add.

  9. Click OK to close the Popup Exceptions window and then click OK again to close the preferences window. Popups will now be blocked, with the exception of those originating from sites in your Popup Exceptions list.
