Blocking Popups in Opera

Opera is an alternative to Netscape and Internet Explorer and can be downloaded from the Opera web site. The free version of Opera is supported by an advertisement banner that is always visible in the upper right corner of the browser window. The paid version of Opera (currently $39) does not contain any advertising. Configuration of popup blocking for both versions is the same. This document was written for version 7.11 of Opera, but configuration should be similar for all newer versions.

  1. Start Opera.

  2. Click on the File menu at the top of the screen, and then choose Preferences.

  3. Click on Windows in the list on the left side of the screen.

  4. Click on the downward-facing arrow next to Pop-ups and choose Open requested pop-ups only, as shown below.

  5. Alternatively, you can select Refuse pop-ups (which will block all popups, including some that may be legitimate -- online banking sites, among others, frequently use popup windows to collect important information from users) or Open pop-ups in the background (which will still open all popups, but will place them behind your current browser window instead of allowing them to take over the screen).

  6. Because popups are frequently an annoyance but are sometimes used for legitimate purposes, we recommend using the Open requested pop-ups only option. This option displays only popup ads that are requested because of a selection you make on a web site, such as logging into your bank's online services.

  7. Click OK to close the Preferences window. Popups will now be blocked according to the options you selected above.
