As noted earlier in these pages Oware!is a DOS-based program. It runs perfectly on Operating Systems all the way up to Windows 95. However, Microsoft made running DOS programs very difficult, nearly impossible, under Windows 98. I suggest that you look into a Shareware program (low cost!) created by the Guillion brothers of Toulouse, France. The game is very popular there usually under the name Awele or Awale, its name in Senegal and elsewhere in the former French West Africa. There is a considerable body of literature in French on mancala games and some sophisticated analyses of strategy and tactics.
The Guillions' game reflects this enthusiasm. It is beautifully conceived and implemented: spectacular graphics (even music!), the ability to modify the rules to match a wide scope of the game's variants, and it plays a very strong game. Take a look at Awale. I still suggest you obtain the book.
