Performance Consulting

In the role of a performance consultant, I assist managers in the analysis of human performance problems and help them build systems that deliver the performance they desire. The model I use for the exploration and understanding of performance assumes the presence of three critical components that effect human performance in the workplace: (1) a person with the right knowledge, skills and attitudes, (2) complete and accurate content (i.e., how to do the performance), and (3) an environment conducive to the performance.*

As a result of many years in the training industry, I am keenly aware of the high cost of training and tend to use training only as a performance improvement tool of last resort -- only if knowledge and skills are lacking. Often, the solutions required to elicit desired performance include tools other than training -- less expensive tools such as information, documentation, feedback, job aids and/or workplace design.

Instructional Design

When a performance solution requires training -- eLearning/WBT or instructor-led (ILT), for example -- I help managers design and develop effective instructional systems.

Effective instructional solutions are performance-based**, meaning that they…

  • Are designed to accomplish pre-specified objectives
  • Include objectives derived from the job or some other part of "real world"
  • Include skill checks with which the success of the instruction can be assessed
  • Offer, during the instruction, an opportunity for learners to do whatever it is the objectives require them to do
  • Encourage learners to study and practice ONLY those skills in which they are not yet competent.

Thought-leaders who have had the greatest influence on my designs include: R. Carkhuff, R. Mager, S. "Thiagi" Thiagarajan, and R. Vitale.

Training of Trainers

Hundreds of managers and trainers from dozens of organizations have used me to help them build better design and facilitation skills. I teach them to…

  • Link their learning programs to results that have impact on their organization's bottom line
  • Evaluate and improve their performance as facilitators
  • Engage more effectively with their learners
  • Effectively handle awkward situations in front of groups of learners
  • Use learning tools such as games, role plays, case studies, story telling and humor.

In addition, I bring to trainers I coach not only a decade of award-winning work in the business of human resource development, but also practical experience in "keeping the content interactive and engaging" from my work in the business of entertainment.

What Makes Me Different from Other Consultants?

Business leaders choose to use me on their performance improvement projects for four main reasons:

  1. Quality mixed with experience -- I combine high-quality work with over a decade of experience in human performance consulting.
  2. A focus on results -- I have "real world" experience in business, and know what it means to have an impact on the bottom line. I'm not just out to help learners have a good time (though often that happens too).
  3. A solid professional network -- My network of professionals includes industry thought-leaders, strategists and practitioners in HPT, instructional design and eLearning.
  4. A history of professional acheivement. I have received certifications, awards and faculty memberships from respected organizations such as Blessing/White, Development Dimensions International (DDI), Georgia State University, American Management Association (AMA) and the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD).
